    STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) mulai berkembang di Amerika Serikat sejak awal 2000-an sebagai respons terhadap menurunnya minat generasi muda terhadap sains dan teknologi, sekaligus meningkatkan daya saing dan perekonomian negara (Bybee, 2013). Pendekatan ini menandai pergeseran dari pembelajaran berbasis disiplin terpisah menuju pembelajaran terintegrasi yang berorientasi pada pemecahan masalah nyata melalui inkuiri, kolaborasi, dan kreativitas. Model seperti Pemelajaran Berbasis Proyek (ProjectBased Learning/PjBL) (Krajcik & Blumenfeld, 2006), Pemelajaran Berbasis Masalah (ProblemBased Learning/PBL) (Hmelo-Silver, 2004), dan Pemelajaran Berbasis Fenomena (PhenomenonBased Learning) (Lakkala, Uusiautti, & Määttä, 2021) terbukti memperkuat kompetensi abad ke-21. Di Asia, implementasi disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan lokal: Singapura melalui Applied Learning Programme (ALP) yang menautkan industri dan keberlanjutan; Jepang dengan budaya monozukuri; Korea Selatan lewat integrasi kurikulum; serta Tiongkok melalui investasi riset dan penciptaan ekosistem, mendorong capaian tinggi pada PISA (OECD, 2023).
